Welcome back to Sages Read — an all-ages, all-community reading challenge! Sages Read is a yearly reading challenge to help us read and discuss books together. Whether you are a teacher sharing a read aloud in a classroom, a book group meeting once a month, or an individual that wants to read more widely, we hope this challenge inspires you to pick up a book. And we'd love to hear from you! Share your book selfies and recommendations with us on Instagram and Facebook and don't forget to use #SagesRead.
Sages Read is a joint initiative of Hartfield Book Co., Allerton Public Library, and Monticello schools. Feel free to ask your local booksellers and librarians for recommendations as you look for books to meet the challenges!
WHAT'S NEW IN 2023?
We've put together a new list of 20 reading challenges with multiple opportunities for incentives and prizes to keep you motivated throughout the year. Each challenge must be met by a different book that you read in 2023. Find the 2023 challenges here and on the StoryGraph. 2023 CHALLENGES
WHAT ARE THE PRIZES?!
BOOK BUG
Read four books that complete four challenges and you have clearly been bitten by the Book Bug! You get to select a prize from our treasure box (may include gift cards and coupons for Hartfield Book Co., local restaurants, and other local businesses).
BOOK WORM
Read eight books that complete eight challenges and you are officially a Book Worm! You have earned a trip to Hartfield’s book vault to select one book or book galley from Hartfield’s children’s and adult giveaway collections.
BOOK DRAGON
Read 12 books that complete 12 challenges and we will declare you to be a mighty Book Dragon! You will receive a second trip to the book vault, this time selecting two books or book galleys from Hartfield's children's and adult giveaway collections. You will also get to choose one of our super exclusive, limited edition, Sages Read-branded items.
BOOK MAGE
Read 20 books that complete all 20 challenges by December 31, 2023, and you will be dubbed the mightiest of the mighty, the bookish-est of the bookish… the powerful Book Mage! As such, you will be summoned to receive a satchel full of bibliomagic (a.k.a., a tote bag stuffed full of books).
HOW DO I CLAIM THE PRIZES?!
Book Bug, Book Worm and Book Dragon prizes can be claimed anytime throughout the year. Just bring your challenge sheet or list of books into Hartfield Book Co. during regular store hours. A bookseller will check off your challenges, deliver your prize(s) and send you on your merry way to continue your awesome reading adventures!
Book Mage prizes will be fulfilled three times a year (in June, September and January). Readers are encouraged to drop off their challenge sheets at Hartfield Book Co. as soon as they have completed all of challenges. You will be added to the next prize distribution and contacted when your prize is ready for pickup.

2023 CHALLENGES
- Read a book with a one-word title
- Read a book that you or your family owns, but that you haven't read yet
- Read a book set in a country you would like to visit
- Read a book that has non-human characters
- Read one of your favorite author's favorite books
- Read a mystery or true crime book that does not involve murder
- Read a book written by or featuring a character who is neurodiverse or has a disability
- Read a book that won a Newbery or Caldecott Medal or Honor
- Read a book that has been banned or challenged
- Read a book written during or about a particular season (i.e., fall, winter, etc.)
- Read a book that you picked solely based on the cover
- Read a book in which the main character is very different from you
- Read a YA or younger nonfiction book
- Read a book by a Native American, Indigenous, or First Nations author
- Read a book with a map inside
- Read a book about siblings
- Read a book with books on the cover
- Read a book that was published the year you were born
- Read a book that is part of a series
- Read a book that meets any Sages Read challenge from a previous year (find past challenges in the menu)
