Welcome back to Sages Read — an all-ages community reading challenge! Sages Read is a yearly reading challenge that we hope inspires you to stretch your reading in new and interesting ways. And to talk and share about the books you're reading! Share your book selfies and recommendations with us on Instagram and Facebook and don't forget to use #SagesRead.
Sages Read is a joint initiative of Hartfield Book Co., Allerton Public Library and Monticello schools. Need help finding books to fit a particular challenge? Feel free to ask a friendly neighborhood bookseller, librarian or teacher! You can also look for recommendations on our Facebook and Instagram pages and browse the challenge on the StoryGraph app to see what others have added.
WHAT'S NEW IN 2024?
We have 24 challenges for 2024! Including one from each of our FIVE previous years! Each challenge must be met by a different book that you read in 2024. Each time you read a book that meets a challenge, record it on your challenge sheet (download from the link below or pick up at Hartfield Book Co., Allerton Public Library or Monticello school libraries) or the StoryGraph app. Challenge progress and prizes are tracked and hosted at Hartfield Book Co. You can receive multiple prizes throughout the year by submitting your challenge progress each time you hit a new prize level.
2024 CHALLENGES
PRIZE LEVELS
BOOK BUG Read four books that complete four challenges and you have clearly been bitten by the Book Bug! You get to select a bookish prize from our treasure box.
BOOK WORM Read eight books that complete eight challenges and you are officially a Book Worm! You have earned a trip to Hartfield’s book vault to select one book from the giveaway collection (includes books for all ages and reading levels).
BOOK DRAGON Read 12 books that complete 12 challenges and you are granted the enviable status of mighty Book Dragon! You will receive both a prize from the treasure box and a book from the book vault.
BOOK MAGE Read 24 books that complete all 24 challenges by December 31, 2024, and you will be dubbed the mightiest of the mighty, the bookish-est of the bookish … the powerful Book Mage! You will be endowed with a satchel of bibliomagic (a.k.a., a tote bag full of books chosen just for you)!
CLAIMING THE PRIZES
BOOK BUG, BOOK WORM and BOOK DRAGON prizes can be claimed anytime throughout the year. Just bring your challenge sheet or list of books into Hartfield Book Co. during regular store hours. A bookseller will check off your challenges, lead you to your treasure(s) and send you on your merry way to continue your awesome reading adventures!
BOOK MAGE prizes will be fulfilled three times a year. Qualifying Book Mage sheets turned in before May 31 will be distributed in June; those turned in by August 31 will be distributed in September; and those turned in by December 31 will be distributed in January. You will be contacted when your prize is ready for pickup.

2024 CHALLENGES
- A book with a yellow cover
- A book with an animal on the cover
- A book with a name in the title
- A book with six or more words in the title
- A book with a title that starts with the first letter of your first name
- A book you chose based solely on the title
- A book written under a pen name (or initials if it’s a picture book)
- An award-winning book written by a woman
- A book in a genre you didn't read last year
- A book of poetry, novel-in-verse or rhyming picture book by a BIPOC (black, indigenous, person of color) or LGBTQIA+ author
- A picture book that was published in the last five years
- A book set in or written about the woods or forest
- A book set in the Midwest
- A book set (at least partially) in a school
- A book that takes place all in one day
- A book told with multiple POVs (points of view)
- A book set in or written about one your favorite historical time periods (or one you’d like to know more about)
- A book that features a game or competition
- A book in which enemies become friends or allies
- An epistolary novel or book of collected letters, emails, texts, etc. (2019)
- A book that has been or is being adapted into a movie or TV show (from 2020)
- A book by a local or regional author or illustrator (2021)
- A book you saw in an Allerton Public Library, Hartfield Book Co, or Monticello school display or post (2022)
- A book with books on the cover (2023)
